Super mare Winx produced a devastating performance to win the $3,230,00 Group One Cox Plate in wintry conditions at Moonee Valley today.
Trained by ex-pat Kiwi Chris Waller Winx settled midfield early as French galloper Vadamos set the early pac in the 2040m WFA classic, with second favourite Hartnall handy in the early running.
Regular rider Hugh Bowman moved Winx up alongside Hartnell as the field moved past the 400m mark and the pair separated from the field and looked like engaging in a two-horse war reminiscent of the famous Bonecrusher-Waverly Star race in 1986.
But Winx was soon in control pushing out to a two length lead by the turn and shooting out to more than half a dozen lengths before easing up for a stunning victory.
Hartnell stayed on gamely for second ahead of Yankee Rose.
