Two of New Zealand's best mares take on some of Australia's best at Rosehill tomorrow, but their trainers were happy yesterday just to keep their charges comfortable as Sydney's temperature gauges started to soar.
"I'm cooking, it's too hot for me," said veteran Manawatu trainer Kevin Gray, on his second visit to Sydney with Daffodil, while Bryce Revell, on his first trip as a trainer with Ekstreme, remarked: "It sure is warm here."
Gray said he was happy to get Daffodil out on the Randwick track early for her gallop yesterday.
"I was very happy with her work and that she got put away in her box cool nice and cool," said Gray.
Rosehill was rated as dead yesterday, with track irrigation taking place as temperatures of 30C plus are expected tomorrow.
Daffodil won the AJC Oaks on her last trip to Sydney, something bookmakers and punters have not forgotten in the leadup to the weight-for-age Ranvet Stakes (2000m).
She was an $8 prospect on TAB Sportsbet, behind Theseo on $2.90 and Rangirangdoo on $4.
"It's a pretty smart sort of field, but I am pleased with her and think she is up to it," said Gray.
Unlike Daffodil, Ekstreme has flown into Sydney under the radar, with her price for the group one Coolmore Classic (1500m) tomorrow out at $35.
Revell would definitely like to see some rain for the Ekraar mare who loves wet ground, but said that was unlikely.
"She is super well and if it rained she would be a great chance, but the tracks are kinder over here, with more grass and cushion."
