Racing: Kindergarten Kid has plenty to live up to

Americain's owners will travel to the United States tomorrow to see the horse they hope will be their next Melbourne Cup winner.

As 2010 Cup winner Americain prepares for his first season at stud in Kentucky, Kindergarten Kid runs in the Hollywood Turf Cup on Sunday.

Kevin and Colleen Bamford, who raced Americain in partnership with Gerry and Val Ryan, will travel to California and meet with the trainer of their new acquisition.

"We're going over on Friday and we will sit down with Peter Miller on Friday night and then go to the races and see how he goes," said Colleen Bamford.

"He'll probably go for a little spell after that. The weather should be nice in California, nicer than it is in England, so he'll probably have a little spell there while we work out the plan.

"We've had him for a couple of months and the day after we bought him he won and then he ran in the Breeders Cup (Turf, 2400m).

"He ran sixth, but they ran a record and he was last into the straight, so in terms of looking at him running over a distance he went pretty well.

"With a little bit of luck we may even have another Melbourne Cup runner next year with him."

Americain left Australia on Tuesday and the Bamfords will check on him in California before he travels to Kentucky on Sunday where he joins the stallion roster at Calumet Farm.

He is expected to return to Australia for the Southern Hemisphere season but a stud has not yet been announced.

In other Australian news, Hall of Fame trainer Lee Freedman will return to Melbourne from Sydney uncertain of his immediate future.

Freedman decided to walk away from his partnership with New Zealander Graeme Rogerson at Randwick after less than a year, saying the venture had become unviable.

He said he had not decided whether he would continue to train horses either in Melbourne or at his family's property, Markdel, near Rye on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

Freedman found it tough to crack the Sydney market and was disappointed at the slow growth rate of his new business.

"The partnership was dissolved here primarily because the horse numbers that I'd hoped would be achieved over the period of time wasn't happening as quickly as I would have liked," Freedman told Melbourne radio RSN.

"And that therefore puts the stable in a somewhat unviable position in terms of numbers in training.

"I made the decision, along with my partner, that it would be best if we dissolved the partnership and we can go our separate ways," he said.

"Obviously I've got a great love and affinity with horses so I would like to continue doing that but I'm leaving the rest of it in abeyance for three or four weeks," he said.

Anthony Freedman has decided to move from Markdel to Flemington to take up the stables vacated by embattled mining entrepreneur Nathan Tinkler. Lee Freedman said it was not his intention to begin training from the property and he would explore other options for the facility.

He all but ruled out working for Racing Victoria, saying that would be "somewhat akin to putting a Tasmanian devil into a cage".
