There were some fabulous runs behind Seachange and Darci Brahma on Saturday.
* Kristov (3rd, 1.8 lengths from the winner). He is a physically deceptive horse and even when racing regularly he looks very round. Even allowing for that, he looked at least one race away on Saturday. Trainer Phil Stevens summed it up: "He looks like a prop today, next time to the races he'll look like a flanker." Terrific effort given his condition.
* Calveen (4th, 2.8 lengths). Understandably looked a touch fresh for her first run. Raced that way, looming up wide on the bend and blew out in the final 75m. Top run for next time though. Looks very bright.
* Bulginbaah (5th, 4.1 lengths). Fought bravely on a track that was too firm for him. Watch out next time it rains.
* Legs (6th, 4.2 lengths). Produced a remarkable finish from the tail of the field, going close to the fastest closing sectional. The 1600m of the Stoney Bridge Stakes is going to suit better, but not as much as will her first middle distance. Could be the value runner in the Kelt on that performance.
* Pentane (7th, 5.2 lengths). Looked in fantastic order. The distance was way too short, but he was making ground stylishly in the final stages. Building up perfectly for the Kelt and the Melbourne Cup. Sure to be a spring and summer star.
* Wahid (8th, 5.4 lengths). Checked at a vital stage and still managed to build momentum again to make a little ground. Looked very bright and should pull significant improvement from his first-up run. Don't leave him out from this point.
* Tusker (9th, 5.6 lengths). Run was a lot better than it looked. Checked in the back straight then forced out to be the widest runner on the home bend. Stuck at it well. Should win a nice stayer's race this preparation.
