Volkstok'n'barrell's seventh in Saturday's A$400,000 Memsie Stakes more than pleased co-trainer Chris Gibbs.
"Initially, we were disappointed he got so far back, but after talking to Blake Shinn [rider] we were happy," said Gibbs. "Blake said when they jumped he had to make a decision whether to go forward or back and he said he felt he was going to have to use too much petrol to go forward, so he went back."
On a day at Caulfield when it was difficult to make significant ground from the tail of the field, Volkstok'n'barrell ran on to be 1.9 lengths from winner Boban.
"Blake said the last 100m of the race was his best 100m. He said from a Caulfield Cup perspective it was a magic effort.
"If he bounces through this race like he seems to have, he'll have to run in the Makybe Diva, which we weren't sure about, or he'll start to get away on us."
