French horse Gailo Chop has struck the first blow for the internationals at this year's Melbourne spring carnival.
Giving trainer Antoine de Watrigant his first Group One success, Gailo Chop defied his weight-for-age rivals in the Mackinnon Stakes yesterday.
Gailo Chop bounced back from his unplaced Cox Plate performance at the unique Moonee Valley racecourse last week and was much more at home on the bigger track at Flemington.
Sent out at $8, Gailo Chop rolled along in front under Ben Melham and rallied in the straight after being headed by Rising Romance ($16) to win by a half length.
"I'm very happy. It's my first Group One," de Watrigant said.
