SYDNEY - Hobby trainer Graham Hoy is prepared to use the New South Wales benchmark handicapping system to his advantage as his galloper Franc chases a hat-trick of wins at Quirindi today.
"You've got to work with the system not against it," the Wauchope-based horseman said.
Hoy, with two horses in work on his 120-acre property, has managed to place his gallant little trier to perfection under the benchmark system.
The lightly-raced 5-year-old tackles the Peter Mesley Tribute Benchmark 64 Handicap (1450m).
Peter W Stanley replaces Marlon Dolendo aboard the gelding after wins at Port Macquarie and Taree.
Franc is a happy horse. So, too, is Hoy and the group, including son Stephen, who race the son of Planchet.
They paid A$5000 for Franc as a weanling and he is now the winner of almost A$40,000.
Under Hoy's training regime, Franc is allowed to wander in an open paddock during the day and he benefits from long bush walks and working along trails on the property.
"He's just an honest little horse, no champion but tries his heart out and is very versatile and adaptable.
"I'd like to think he's been well placed and there's still upside to him yet," said Hoy.
