A windfall of almost $180,000 awaits the connections of glamour Ruakaka filly Jazzella should she live up to expectations and win the Oceanz Seafood Northland Breeders' Stakes on her home track tomorrow.
The Dean and Donna Logan-trained filly is a hot favourite to complete a clean sweep of the Whangarei Racing Club's Two-Year-Old Triple Crown. Victory in the $60,000 stakes event would add another $37,500 to her current bankroll of $32,750.
She also stands to collect the $100,000 bonus available to the winner of all three races in the series, plus the $30,000 in owner and trainer bonuses for the leading points earner.
And if that's not enough, Jazzella also qualifies for the $15,000 TBS bonus attached to the race, with the winner's share worth close to $11,000.
The Black Minnaloushe filly has dominated the series since winning the 1000m opening leg by two lengths in May. She was the favourite when she increased her winning margin to 5 1/2 lengths in the second leg on June 21 and late yesterday was quoted at $1.50 on the TAB's fixed odds market to complete the hat-trick.
The Logans know that you have never won until you cross the finish line, but it's still, understandably, difficult to dent their confidence.
"We were pretty confident with Ring Of Fire in the Caloundra Cup until that horse fell in front of him," says Dean Logan as he keeps his feet on the ground with a reminder of the bad luck they encountered in Queensland just two weeks ago.
"But you can't get away from the fact that our filly is the one to beat tomorrow. Donna and I have been away and haven't seen a lot of her lately, but we watched her work yesterday and we're happy with her.
"She doesn't need a lot between races and our foreman Chris Gibbs has done a great job with her.
"She's up against a couple she hasn't met before and that's going to make it interesting, but she beat some fair sorts last time and did it well."
Jazzella, who will once again have long-time Logan associate Catherine Treymane in the saddle, toyed with her rivals in those two winning runs. She started from a wide gate to cross and lead over 1000m in May and last month had no trouble leading and dominating over an extra 200m.
Tomorrow she has drawn midfield at six and it's hard to imagine any of her rivals contesting the early lead. What happens beyond that point will be interesting, but expect to see her doing much the same again.
The anticipated clash with impressive debut winner Narredson has failed to eventuate due to Richard Otto's youngster coming up shin-sore. There is, however, competition in the shape of last start Te Rapa winner Amazing One, a long second favourite at $9.
He was run down late on debut when finishing a close third to Narredson and in the meantime left a big impression with his come from behind win at the end of last month. In-form jockey Opie Bosson will most likely attempt to sling-shot the favourite late.
Cambridge filly Roma also did her best work late when winning at Ellerslie a month ago, while Wanganui visitor Mels Bad Boy will be relying on seasoned condition after a win and a second in heavy ground at the most recent of his seven career starts.
Bosson gets a good opportunity to add to his late season tally as well as complete a unique double when he combines with topweight Leica Guv in tomorrow's other feature, the $30,000 Ford XR6 Whangarei Cup.
Bosson has been on the rejuvenated 7-year-old in both recent wins, and was also his jockey when he won the Northland Breeders' Stakes five years ago.
Topweight of 60kg is a significant impost, but that will be negated to a certain degree by the anticipated improved track conditions from the very testing ground he managed in last Saturday's Te Awamutu Cup victory.
