Fin Powrie has been appointed to the new position of general manager, integrity, of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.
Powrie, 51, is at present director of racing and chief steward of the Emirates Racing Authority, based in Dubai. He was appointed chief steward of the Emirates authority in 2001 before being promoted to his present position in 2003.
In that role he has been instrumental in further developing the Dubai World Cup, in particular the revision of equine quarantine protocols between the UAE and other countries, and in introducing two significant initiatives: the Dubai International Racing Carnival and the Emirates International Apprentice Jockey Championship.
Powrie will be based in Wellington at the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) office and takes up the position in September.
Of his appointment, Powrie said: "I am very pleased to be joining NZTR at this time. I have had five good years in the Emirates and have had the opportunity to travel to many countries to see their racing.
"Through my association with the Asian Racing Federation, I have got to know the chairman of NZTR, Guy Sargent, and appreciate his straightforward approach to racing administration and his obvious love for the sport of horse racing.
"My only concerns may arise around Bledisloe Cup time!"
NZTR chief executive Paul Bittar said: "I am delighted that Fin has accepted this role. He will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to NZTR at a time when the racing industry is starting to rejuvenate and prosper, which, I have no doubt, helped him in making this decision."
