Kings Will Dream reclaimed favouritism for the race following the draw, firming into $5 with some bookmakers while Chris Waller's mare Youngstar, who also drew reasonably well in 10, eased half a point to $5.50.
Such has been the trouble-free run of Kings Will Dream since his Australian debut in January at Warrnambool in a lowly Benchmark 64 that even though he is winless in four runs this spring, his form at weight-for-age level has surpassed expectations.
Spicer said such was the easy ride so far for connections, he could only lament the wait they've had to endure since the horse claimed a ballot-free run into the Cup via his Mornington Cup win in March.
"But we're here now and things couldn't have gone smoother," he said.
The sole New Zealand-trained horse in the race Jon Snow was not so well treated in the draw, coming up with barrier 15.
That is less than ideal for a horse whose best performances have been when he races on the speed.
And he also appears to not have been kindly treated by the Melbourne weather.
Jon Snow won last year's ATC Derby in Sydney on a wet track and would appear to need more rain to bring the track into the easy or soft range to be a winning chance on Saturday.
But while rain and even storms were forecast for Melbourne as early as Tuesday night they hadn't eventuated by late afternoon yesterday and a revised forecast suggests any rain will be of minimal concern for the track and it is likely to race as good on Saturday.
But one superstar of racing not being put off by wide draws was champion Kiwi jockey James McDonald claiming the 19 drawn out for his mount The Taj Mahal did not rule the horse out of Saturday's Cup.
"It can be a funny old race," McDonald said before declaring the horse will be in the race 'up to his ears' if he can find any luck from the gate.
Kerrin McEvoy, who won the Caulfield Cup 10 years ago for Godolphin aboard All The Good, echoed McDonald's thoughts about the unpredictability of the Caulfield Cup.
"It's a different race to ride in than any other race during the year," he noted, saying he was pleased with the barrier 10 drawn by his mount Youngstar as it meant all options were open coming to the crucial turn out of the straight.
Pat Cosgrave won a Group One on Benbatl in the Caulfield Stakes at his first Australian ride last Saturday but admitted he will have his hands full trying for a repeat this Saturday on Best Solution after the Godolphin horse drew barrier 17.
