Vavasour went up 8 rating points for that last-start win and Decorah did not drop a point. There appears to be a little less depth in terms of form compared to the Avondale Cup and these two mares have strong claims.
That said 59kg and 60kg are big weights for mares, particularly in staying races. It will take a big effort from either to grab victory.
The lack of depth in the handicapping is evidenced by in-form Saint Emilion. He has looked very talented coming through the grades for the Baker/Forsman stable, but has yet to be tried in open company and has had just the two races upward of R75.
Yet he has 57kg, which makes the handicapping of the two topweights less ominous.
The $100,000 Cal Isuzu Stakes at Te Rapa has drawn a topline field of in-form mares.
Kisses, local Stolen Dance, Consensus, Rasa Lila and Arrow In The Sand make for an hugely interesting line-up.
Stolen Dance, from David Greene's local stable, has been in magical form lately and is expected to make a great showing in stepping up to this grade.
Rasa Lila is highly talented and Arrow In The Sand is the big improve
after a couple of runs this preparation.
Class act Natuzzi is expected to be improved for his first-up race at Otaki when he steps out in the $50,000 J Swap Contractors Sprint.
Natuzzi did not figure at Otaki, but did not get the best of runs and
from a mid-field barrier is likely to be better placed this time.
He faces Tomorrowland, who won that race at Otaki after receiving a perfect drag along behind the speed most of the way.
Tavy, impressive coming through the grades, looks well placed to step up from 53kg, compared to the 60kg Natuzzi will carry.
