KEY POINTS:
Two-year-old Danehill Smile added black type to her name with victory in the Listed Canonbury Stakes at Randwick and will now target the $A500,000 Inglis Classic at Randwick on February 10.
Trainer Anthony Cummings was pleased to see the filly forced to dig deep to overhaul the Gai Waterhouse-trained Keiki and win by 1 1/4 lengths with $1.55 million purchase Arlington the same margin away third in the 1100m race yesterday.
"That was a great experience, for the first time she was extended for a furlong [200m] or more," Cummings said. "We'll put her in the paddock and give her a freshen-up before bringing her back for the Classic."
Keiki bolted away to open up a big lead early before jockey Chris Munce slowed the pace at 650m while Darren Beadman sat at the back of the field on Danehill Smile.
Beadman pushed out on the turn before letting Danehill Smile down 200m from home and she powered to the post for a comfortable win.
"She takes a few strides to get going but once you wind her up she goes really well," Beadman said.
Waterhouse was pleased with the performance of Keiki who booked herself a place in the $1 million Magic Millions 2-Year-Old Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast on January 13.
Arlington's third place lifts the colt to $18,300 in prizemoney and moves him into the top 20 qualifiers for the Magic Millions.
