SYDNEY: The Bart Cummings-trained pair of So You Think and Viewed have topped the Australia and New Zealand classifications for 2009-10, each rating 122.
So You Think earned his rating with his performances to win the Cox Plate and run second to All American in the Emirates Stakes, both against older horses.
Viewed, who died this year, became the first horse since Rising Fast (1955) to come back and win a Caulfield Cup after winning the Melbourne Cup the previous year.
Starspangledbanner was the next highest rated horse at 121 for his wins over six furlongs (1200m) in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and the July Cup at Newmarket.
His overseas performances were included for the season under review in addition to his wins in the Caulfield Guineas and the Oakleigh Plate.
However, now that he is trained in Ireland by Aidan O'Brien his future racing will not be considered for the ANZ ratings.
Alverta's third placing in the July Cup at Newmarket gave her an international rating of 115 and put her at the head of the sprint category for mares.
Outstanding miler and Horse of the Year favourite Typhoon Tracy was the highest rated mare in Australia with a rating of 118 achieved four times in her wins in the C F Orr Stakes and Futurity Stakes against all comers and the Myer Classic and Queen of the Turf Stakes against her own sex, all at Group One level.
The best performance by a New Zealand-trained horse in New Zealand during the season was produced by Vosne Romanee.
The seven-year-old claimed Group One wins in the Kelt Capital, Zabeel Classic and New Zealand Stakes to achieve a peak rating of 115.
The three-year-old listings were headed by So You Think and Starspangledbanner ahead of AJC Australian Derby winner Shoot Out and Newmarket Handicap winner Wanted, both on 117.
Melito's wins in TJ Smith and Winter Stakes earned her the top place among three-year-old fillies with a ranking of 115 ahead of VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume on 113.
Crystal Lily headed the two-year-old category, rating 113 for her Golden Slipper victory.
Slipper runner-up Decision Time rated 112 for his performance to head the colts and geldings category.
The ANZ listings are compiled by the senior handicappers representing the Principal clubs of Australia and New Zealand.
The performances of horses rated 115 and above are then confirmed by the World Thoroughbred Rankings Committee representing senior handicappers from major racing nations across the world.
