Soriano's co-trainer Graeme Rogerson lodged a protest against runner-up Vavasour and rider Danielle Johnson, which was upheld.
Soriano's rider Jonathon Parkes pointed out on the electronic image in the judicial room that Vavasour was three horse widths out rounding the home bend while at that time he was attempting a rails passage he felt he was entitled to.
Stewards agreed and relegated Vavasour to fourth, promoting Spoke to Carlo to second and Soriano to third.
"In my opinion I'd have won by two lengths but for the interference," Parkes told the inquiry room.
There is not a lot of Consensus and McKee feels the mare will mature physically in a year or 18 months and at that stage find her best form.
"This time around she will probably be aimed at races like the Counties Cup and Avondale Cup."
At least two sets of former Melbourne Cup winning colours got a winning post airing leading up to the big race.
The blue and white Sir Peter Vela colours Ethereal carried to victory in the Melbourne Cup were aboard Rasa Lila in her last-to-first Ellerslie win and at Flemington the Cummings black and white chequers with yellow sleeves got a winning turn in Race 2 on Zarzali.
Saint Kitt again showed his liking for the Ellerslie track when he downed the Rating 85 stayers in the first race yesterday.
The Kelly Burne-trained Saint Kitt settled midfield and one out before rider Vinnie Colgan brought him with a well-timed run to take the major honours in the Carlton Events 2200.
Lightly-tried mare Perfect Fit doubled her winning tally at Ellerslie with a dominant performance in race 3 yesterday.
Her first victory came on debut at Taupo last season and she finished in the money in all her subsequent appearances, including a fourth placing in the Group 3 Cambridge Breeders' Stakes.
Perfect Fit was given a dream ride by Michael Coleman and the Ken and Bev Kelso-trained four-year-old put her rivals to sword in the closing 250 metres of the Bach Espresso 1200.
Trainer Stephen Ralph will present two strong chances at today's Avondale meeting.
The first is the well-related debutante Regina Giovanna, who beat recent winner Penn 'N' Teller in her latest trial, in the AJC Life Members' Maiden.
"She's not a big filly, but she's got a big stride," Ralph said. "She's got the breeding " she's by Per Incanto out of a half-sister to Xanadu."
His other runner is Special Unit and she is ready for another bold showing in the Graeme Barton 2100. She was fourth at Matamata two runs back before a third placing last time out at Ellerslie.
