Amazing winter galloper Bulginbaah won his third Group Three Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa yesterday in very trying conditions, his outstanding wet track and race record once again coming to the fore.
In the hands of Trudy Thornton, Bulginbaah capitalised on a nice trip on the pace and unwound with the best finish in what could be described as a slog in the very heavy conditions.
Rain fell steadily throughout the day
Bulginbaah's durability has always been his greatest asset.
He won the Foxbridge Plate for the first time back in 2006, and backed that with a fourth in 2007, second in 2008 to Jacowils, and won the race it last year.
Thornton was aboard last year too. It was Bulginbaah's first win in 12 months, almost to the day, as his 2009 Foxbridge Plate victory was his most recent turn to salute the judge before yesterday.
Wanganui trainers Ken Cropp and Catherine Wilson may consider the Hawkes Bay carnival, hoping the wet weather continues for the winner of 12 of 32 starts on soft or heavy ground.
The $70,000 feature was marred when Who Knows (Samantha Collett) and Irish Colleen (Leith Innes) fell. Collett, Thornton's daughter, walked away, while Innes was stretchered off.
