"We are pretty damn close but, obviously, we are hoping for different things," says Terry.
"I'd love to win the Miracle Mile and show everybody in Australia how good this Terror is.
"And I think he can do because he has never been better.
"But if he can't win I hope like hell Ken's horse does and I will be the first person to congratulate him. That would be something pretty special."
The brothers grew up in Christchurch and as modest as Terry is, he chuckles that people think he is the younger.
"I'm actually 73 and Ken is 68, but I quite like people thinking it is the other way."
While they share a lifelong love of horses it was Ken, who divides his time running his businesses between Queensland and Hong Kong, who struck equine gold first.
He had a decent topliner called National Glory then the real deal - champion pacer Master Musician.
Terry had some good ones before an incredible past five years with millionaire pacers Stunin Cullen and now Terror To Love.
Money clearly isn't an issue for McDonald, as the TAB bookies have found out to their detriment on several occasions.
"I have always been a punter, I love having a go," he says.
But Terry has something money can't buy. A naturally affable personality which makes him impossible not to like.
He admits he is nervous heading into this weekend, not just because of the Miracle Mile.
"What will happen in the race will happen and there are plenty of good people involved with the other horses so whoever wins I will be happy for them," he offers.
What makes him nervous is flying from his Dunedin base to Sydney for the race, the first time he has ever got on a plane to see Terror To Love race.
"I hate flying, absolutely hate it," he says.
"I had a really bad flight from Palmerston North to Wellington 17 years ago, hired a car, got on the ferry then drove the rest of the way home.
"I have been on a plane once since. That was last year when I went to Brisbane for some medical stuff to help my daughter, cause I would do anything for her.
"But I got bloody conned into coming to Sydney for this race by my mate Reg Storer, who I race horses with.
"He booked the flight and now I have to go. But I will be taking some sort of pill in the Koru Lounge and they might have to wheel me on the plane."
Which will all be worth it if Terror To Love wins.
Or For A Reason.
