Former champion apprentice jockey Opie Bosson, 24, is on a self imposed four week trial period before deciding if he is going to quit the racing industry.
The Matamata-based jockey is considered one of the most gifted horsemen ever produced in New Zealand but has waged a constant battle controlling his riding weight.
"I'm giving myself another four weeks and then I'll decide if I want to continue as a jockey or possibly retire," said Bosson.
"I'm just not enjoying the amount of wasting I have to do to control my riding weight and it's really starting to upset me.
"It's not fun for me at the moment and I've thought long and hard about things and retirement is one option I may consider."
While the wins have continued to flow this season for the talented jockey - 17 wins and $403,000 in stake money - Bosson is approaching the crossroads in his riding career.
