Andrew Brown has resigned as chief executive of the New Zealand Racing Board and plans to return to the United Kingdom.
Brown made the announcement yesterday after less than two years in a job that reportedly came with a $900,000 salary package.
"I am very pleased with the progress we have made in the past two years to drive change at the NZ Racing Board, including the introduction of TABTV and the soon to be completed installation of a new, world-leading betting engine," said Brown.
"However, it was a major decision to move to New Zealand. With two young children, it has been particularly hard on my wife to be so far away from family and friends.
"This has weighed heavily on me and therefore I have made the decision to return with the family to the United Kingdom."
Brown said despite the effects of the global recession and impact on household spending, the NZRB has achieved strong financial results.
He said that after the recent announcement regarding reductions in distributions this year, the codes' funding would continue to be above 2006 levels.
NZRB chairman Michael Stiassny said the board supported Brown's decision to put his family interests first.
