Blood Brotha, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, has a pedigree in his favour to take the step up in distance to the New Zealand Cup (3200m) next Saturday.
Blood Brotha claims as his great grand-dam Princess Mellay, winner of the NZ Cup in 1970 and 1971.
Blood Brotha is a 5-year-old by Danzighill from Laura Dee, by Personal Escort from Lal's Gift, by Noble Bijou from Princess Mellay. Blood Brotha is prepared at Wanganui by Raymond Connors, the trainer and part-owner of Hypnotize, winner of the Great Northern Steeplechase for the third time in September. He races both horses with his father, Mark.
Hypnotize is by Yamanin Vital from Auburn Rose and claims Princess Mellay as his great-grand-dam.
Blood Brotha and Hypnotize were both bred on the Taieri Plains, near Dunedin, by Brian and Hec Anderton and their wives, Lorraine and Pat.
Blood Brotha was bought by Mark Connors after being passed in for $14,000 as a 2-year-old at the 2008 South Island Sale.
"I phoned Mark after the sale and recommended the horse to him," said Wayne Stuart, the manager of White Robe Lodge Stud.
