Canterbury might have lost the Interdominions but the southern city's earthquake relief fund will still be a winner, with Harness Racing Australia announcing a fundraising package to support the region via the Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal.
On behalf of the Australian harness racing industry, HRA will donate 5 per cent of the prize money earned by Australian horses in both the pacing and trotting finals at Alexandra Park tomorrow night.
In an added boost, this contribution will be generously matched by the majority of connections of Australian horses in the finals.
HRA Chairman Geoff Want said the decision to support the city was an easy one.
"We've seen natural disasters wreak havoc in our country over the past few months, but we have all been particularly moved by the devastation in Christchurch, a community with rich harness racing heritage and strong links to our industry," said Want.
"I applaud the generosity of the many owners of Australian horses who have committed to this cause."
The prize money contributions come on the heels of an online auction of autographed Interdominion final driver's colours announced by HRA on Monday.
The commemorative sets of colours come with a letter of authenticity and are available to the highest bidder via www.harness.org.au
"Since the announcement of the drivers' colours auction, our offices have been inundated with enquiries. It is a unique way to own a part of Interdominion history and has an added bonus of supporting the Earthquake Appeal," said Want.
