Singapore trainer Shane Baertschiger could have been excused if his mind wandered from the Kranji meeting last night.
Baertschiger had four runners at Kranji but today he has one of the leading chances in the Moonee Valley Vase.
New Zealanders Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young prepare the Baertschiger-owned Atmosphere, the $6 second favourite for the Vase and third favourite at $8.50 for the Victoria Derby at Flemington next Saturday. Baertschiger and Busuttin have had a long association from their years in Singapore, when Baertschiger was assistant-trainer for his father, Don, while Trent worked for his father, Paddy.
It was through this association that Baertschiger bought Atmosphere with a Derby bid in mind.
Although still a maiden, Atmosphere has indicated he will relish a longer trip and placed himself in Derby contention with a last-start second over 1800m at Flemington on October 4. Baertschiger said Atmosphere had worked impressively at Moonee Valley's Breakfast With The Best on Tuesday morning.
