Anvils Best Ever sliced 3.5 seconds off the track record for 3200m when he eclipsed the opposition in 3:59.7 in the Tuapeka Cup at Forbury Park yesterday.
Anvils Best Ever was taken to the front at the 1300m by trainer-driver Nigel McGrath and won by eight lengths from Lord Forbes, who recorded 3:58.7 after starting from 40m.
The winner lowered the track record of 4:03.2 set by Highview Tommy in the Tuapeka Cup last year.
The national record is 3:56.7 set by Changeover in the 2008 NZ Cup.
Anvils Best Ever has bettered a 2:00 rate in four of his wins, including a 1:58.9 rate for 1700m (mobile) when he won the final of the Young Guns series at Alexandra Park last year as a 2-year-old. He ran a 2.00.5 rate yesterday.
Jumpforjoy set a track record for all ages when she won the heat of the Sires' Stakes Fillies series for 3-year-olds in a 1:55.8 mile rate for 1700m (mobile).
Her time of 2:02.4 was 0.4 seconds inside the track record set by the 2-year-old Charge Forward in March.
The previous best by a 3-year-old filly was 2:03.1 by Angela Jane in 2002.
It was the second win in five starts for Jumpforjoy, raced by her breeders trainer-driver Clark Barron and Alex McDonald, of Invercargill.
Barron said it was unlikely that Jumpforjoy would head to Auckland for the final of the Fillies Championship on December 31.
"I will discuss it with Alex, but I doubt if she would go to Auckland. She is a big filly and there is a lot of racing for her later in the season."
