Calling Richie McCaw and his fellow All Blacks. Philip Chen wants you at Randwick on October 7 to support his horse, All Black Gold.
The Hamilton-born Sydney-based doctor was all smiles after the horse, named because of the transtasman banter with his medical practice partner and fellow owner, Robert Sheahan, won at Rosehill on Saturday.
All smiles and a bit of cheek, for the rugby-mad Chen suggested McCaw could lead the supporters for the colt when he tackles the group one Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick in a fortnight.
"I'm friends with [rugby commentator] Grant Nisbett and always email him when the horse is going to run and I said maybe he could come over and bring some All Blacks with him," Chen said.
McCaw and company could have some trouble with the latter part of the horse's name though - the Gold represents the Wallabies.
"My partner and I have always had a transtasman rivalry at our work and thought we would bring that to our horses," Chen said, adding that a previous horse, Bledisloe Boy, won one race.
Fittingly, All Black Gold's jockey Jay Ford raced in black silks, with a grey fernleaf, yellow sleeves, green armband and a yellow cap.
Chen said he had insisted on a "talented young Kiwi trainer" in Chris Waller.
The pair previously raced the 2001 Doomben Cup winner, Mr Bureaucrat, a half-brother to All Black Gold, but said the win on Saturday in the group three A$250,000 ($290,000) Gloaming Stakes (1800m) was special because they bred the colt.
The victory was Waller's biggest financially and marked his rising prominence in Sydney's training ranks. He arrived in Sydney from Foxton in 2000 and has steadily built up a strong team.
Waller thought All Black Gold was ready to tackle group one class after his easy win on Saturday, only seven days after winning a class three event at Rosehill.
"He's been racing well and I thought he'd be right to back up and he was," Waller said. "He showed a bit of class today and I think he'll handle the 2000m Spring Champion trip."
