Average down, median up - they were two contrasting figures from the select weanling session of yesterday's National Broodmare, Weanling and Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka in Auckland.
A total of 170 lots were sold in the weanling session for a total of $1,828,850, reported auctioneers New Zealand Bloodstock.
The average price was $10,758, down from $16,328 at last year's weanling select session.
But the median was $6000, up from $5000 last year and the clearance rate was 85 per cent, compared to 77 per cent last year.
NZ Bloodstock marketing manager Petrea Vela said the quality of this year's catalogue was not as strong, and vendors were realistic.
Top price yesterday was $150,000 for a Montjeu colt from Go Norn purchased by Worldwide Bloodstock for Hong Kong. Vela said this was one of the highest prices paid for a weanling at Karaka.
The sale continues today and tomorrow.
