KEY POINTS:
The career of champion kiwi racehorse Xcellent is over.
The six-year-old broke down after his win in the $100,000 Trentham Stakes yesterday and scans have confirmed the worst for trainer Paul Moroney. He says the vets have told him Xcellent has severe tendon damage.
Xcellent faces about six months of rehabilitation but will not race again. He had a record of 13 starts for eight wins, a second and a third, and earnings of $1.64 million.
