An each-way flutter on Scott Base is a sensible approach in today's feature. He has come up royally and his trials have been impressive. Jon Snow is the wildcard. The slight catch is his awkward barrier slot. Don't be surprised if Wyndspelle flashes home to poke his nose into the first four placings. He is underrated.
A good start for the day could come via Maison Roxanne (No14, R1) in the opener at Ruakaka. Her two winning barrier trials suggested she would be difficult to beat when first taken to the races. She clears the gates quickly and will be on the speed from the get-go.
Major Tom (No2, R2) should come back to form in this. He won three straight on this track then failed in unsuitable heavy footing in the Rotorua Cup. His 2kg claim puts him right in the frame. Stablemate Greencast (No1) has plenty of weight, but matching talent.
The local Gibbs/Bradley stable is in for another massive harvest and Amazing Az (No2, R3) will go close to backing up Major Tom for them. He is facing a tougher field here, but was super impressive leaving maidens.
Ugo Foscolo (No2, R5) has had his issues at times but there is no denying his talent. His record fresh is excellent and he has had a trial to fit him up. Rikki Tikki Tavi (No7) and Spider (No6) were both stylish at the last meeting here. Rikki Tikki Tavi was unlucky and Spider missed the jump.
Race 6 is a topline field with six real winning chances. Hello It's Me (No6) is all class and after her first-up victory here will be in the right shape for a repeat. Her stablemate Danzdanzdance (No5) is a stayer and will quickly need more ground, but she is the type to sprint well fresh on her home track. Extremely interesting race.
Race 7, the three-year-old, is an equally fascinating contest. Melt (No4) likes a bit of give in the footing and she might just get enough to make her the one to beat. She can produce a massive finish. Star Performance (No2) looked good winning on debut and Not Usual Content (No1) will get some of it.
Simply Optimistic (No9, R8) is underrated and can run a big race fresh. Her decent barrier will help the cause. Bevan Street (No2) could be a doubtful starter, but a real contender if he attends.
