KEY POINTS:
Scobie Breasley, who has died aged 92, was the "galloping grandfather" who won his first Epsom Derby at the age of 50.
For well over five decades, he was Australia's greatest ambassador in racing, first as a jockey, then trainer, and in latter years in the role of roving representative, most notably at Epsom, where he was guest of honour for the 2003 Derby.
His laid-back, unassuming manner instantly won friends in Britain, where he first ventured in 1950, riding 73 winners, and continued in 1951, chalking up another 50.
Enduring the disappointment of never having won Australia's biggest race, the Melbourne Cup, despite many attempts, Scobie found himself still searching for his first win in the Epsom Derby after celebrating his 50th birthday.
He picked up the ride on Santa Claus in 1964 - "He was always like Father Christmas to me," he would chuckle - and cruised home a comfortable but "snug" winner.
