One of the great characters of Australian racing, Sydney's larrikin advertising guru and brewery owner John Singleton, invariably comes up with an amusing quip.
The latest: Asked on whether he'd like to swap with Gai Waterhouse and take over the training of his outstanding mare More Joyous, he said "She can't drink and I can't train".
Mind blowing: Former Perth sprinter Hay List's win at Moonee Valley on Saturday. An emerging superstar.
Careful and astute: Hay List's Gosford trainer John McNair may miss the group one A$400,000 Manikato Stakes next Friday night. "I've got concerns about running horses in cold night air, it has been known to make horses bleed."
Scary: McNair says he's frightened to say how good he thinks Hay List is.
Best unplaced run: Bonus Bond's fourth at Ruakaka. Took off and led a long way from home, giving the others a shot at him. Less than half a length from the winner and likely to produce an entirely different result on better conditions.
Against the pattern: Superturf's second behind Spare A Fortune in the big go at Awapuni, renamed Bogsville on Saturday. Conditions meant they couldn't come from back or wide and he did both, powering home. Under-rated.
Back these: Hoofit, who had to cover ground then pushed wider on the home bend. Should be improved and will appreciate further than 1200m.
Gaston: Did remarkably well to be just beaten after sitting three wide without cover. Tried very hard. Next up.
She Rules: Only one of her previous seven wins had been at 1200m, but she made it look easy at Ruakaka. Best with a bit of cut in the ground and at 1400m and 1600m.
Waitui Zone: Ruakaka wasn't conducive to leaders, but he was still in it for a long way up the home straight. Hard to beat on a leader's track soon.
Time Pays: Got caught back on the inside in an awkward spot and did well to finish yet another second. His turn will come.
Caratacus: Massive in coming from last. Just needs to find similar conditions.
November Rain: Made ground nicely when the 1200m was way too short. Will be improved.
O'Right Zen: On debut and did well for second to a more experienced runner.
Conroy: Massive, big bloke given time to mature. Led and won comfortably without knowing what he was doing. Untapped.
Cadonna: Had to do a fair bit of work to lead early and only just beaten by a horse who saved massive ground along the rails.
Deep Forest: Three deep without cover and kept trying hard to the line for third.
Tap 'N' Gap: Made good late ground against the pattern. Tough to beat in wet conditions when back runners are suited.
Sack These: Like last week, you can forgive anything that got back and was beaten, especially on that heavy track at Awapuni.
