Leading jockey Hugh Bowman, the regular rider of Winx, has been suspended for a month for three separate offences when riding Melbourne Cup runner-up Marmelo on Tuesday.
Hugh Bowman was found guilty of three transgressions: careless riding for allowing his horse to cause interference to Japanese runner Chestnut Coat; using the whip 12 times before the final 100 metres of the race when the limit is five; and being a kilo over his assigned weight limit.
Bowman pleaded guilty to all the changes, but would consider an appeal against the severity of the ban, as he was due to ride in the Japan Cup on November 25.
The Herald Sun reported that Racing Victoria's chief steward Robert Cram criticised the senior jockey.
"We admire your horsemanship skills and ability to ride," Cram said in the hearing.
