Snowboarder Juliane Bray will be the New Zealand Olympic Team flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.
Bray was chosen to lead her teammates into BC Stadium tonight in recognition of her commitment and professional attitude as well for the high regard in which she was seen.
Chef de mission Pete Wardell said while the decision was tough, he was delighted to have named the 34-year-old boarder.
"Juliane is well-respected as an athlete. She has performed consistently over a period spanning two Olympic Games and numerous world cups.
"Her experience means she is seen as a mentor to our younger team members and, as an athlete, she reflects the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect."
Bray was named flag bearer during a unique celebration for the New Zealand Olympic Team hosted by the Squamish people of British Columbia.
Squamish drumming, song and dance were joined by traditional Maori waiata and kapa haka as the New Zealand Team was welcomed.
As Bray was named Te Mahutonga (Constellation of the Southern Cross), the New Zealand Olympic Team's feather cloak, was placed on her shoulders and her team honoured her with a haka.
"I am honoured to have been named and proud to represent you," said Bray.
"New Zealand athletes are unique and the Olympic Games are an opportunity for us to shine on the day."
Bray will be the fourth New Zealand flag bearer to wear the kakahu (cloak) in an opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
