There were two million applicants for tickets into London's Olympic stadium for today's schedule of events, which included the men's 100 metre finals.
80,000 of those applicants were there to see Usain Bolt sprint into history, force his Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake into second place, and become the first 100m sprinter since Carl Lewis to win back-to-back gold medals.
Bolt's race, and his victory, brought the crowd's united voice to its absolute maximum.
The Olympic stadium was full and buzzing when competition began, and any performance by a British athlete, successful or otherwise, brought forth a wall of noise no Motörhead gig could have matched.
It was a party of royal proportions, and even London Mayor Boris Johnson received a rock star's welcome when he appeared on the big screen.
