A new name has sprung up as an Olympic contender on the track for Sydney.
Michael Aish, a 23-year-old Kiwi studying in Colorado, has run a 10,000m time 4s shy of the New Zealand qualifying mark.
Aish, who grew up in Taranaki, ran 28m 9s at a meet in Stanford, California - breaking the international Olympic target by 1s, but falling short of the 28m 5s standard set by Athletics New Zealand.
Athletics NZ are trying to get Aish a start in Europe next month for another crack at the mark.
