A weary Nicolas Massu reeled in Mardy Fish in five tortuous sets yesterday to win Chile their second gold medal at an Olympics less than 24 hours after helping them to their first.
The 24-year-old, who had not won a single match on a hard court this year before the Games, beat American Fish 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to land the men's tennis singles title.
A medal ceremony, news conference and mandatory dope test meant Massu had not left the stadium until after 4am yesterday morning after his gold medal-winning performance in the men's doubles with Fernando Gonzalez which started on Saturday night.
