Sonny Bill Williams has abandoned the Olympic village and his wounded All Black Sevens team mates and returned to New Zealand.
Not only did a flopped Olympic campaign saw the men's All Blacks Sevens go from fancied gold medal hope to finish fifth overall, Williams ruptured his achilles in the opening game to be ruled out of sport completely for between six to nine months.
While other members of the team have stayed on in Rio to support the rest of the Kiwi campaign, All Blacks team mate Liam Messam helped crocked star Williams home to Auckland International Airport today.
In a picture posted to Twitter today, Messam described the Rio campaign as "a blast."
"Rio was a blast but it's time to be nurse Hunga and get the big man @SonnyBWilliams home to get fixed up."
