Gill opened with 20.19m but then produced a 20.80m heave with his final throw to ensure both Kiwis will throw in the final from 11:30am later this morning.
In the men's triathlon, Ryan Sissons (17th place) and Tony Dodds (21st) finished well off the pace set by the seemingly unbeatable Brownlie brothers of Great Britain.
There was plenty of drama outside of the Kiwi camp, highlighted by the possible elimination of the US women's 4x100-metre relay following a botched handover by superstar runner Allyson Felix.
The team laid an official protest after the race, claiming that Felix was bumped by a rival runner just ahead of the clumsy handover, and will have another shot at qualifying for the final when the track and field events resume later this morning.
The ongoing saga of US swimmer Ryan Lochte and his claimed Rio mugging has taken yet another twist overnight with a source from Brazilian police saying that Lochte fabricated the whole thing to avoid an embarassing incident.
The police official claims that Lochte and fellow swimmers Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen broke a toilet door at a gas station before being confronted and asked to pay for the damages.
The swimmers had earlier told police they were mugged at gunpoint by men in police uniform.
Also, in a developing story, the Rio doping court has said a male weightlifter from Kyrgyzstan will be stripped of his OIympic bronze medal after failing a doping test. No futher details were currently available.
