Kiwi sprint cyclist Sam Webster has won his heat to advance to the next round of the men's keirin at the Rio Olympics as teammate Eddie Dawkins failed to make the cut.
Webster took the initiative in his heat to put the hammer down as soon as the motorised derny that had been setting the pace pulled off the track.
He opened up a 30m gap over the rest of the field and then had the strength to hold off the fast-finishing Dutchman Matthijs Buchli and France's Francois Pervis to win in a time of 10.346 seconds.
Dawkins, who claimed silver medals in the keirin at the World Championships in both 2015 and 2016, finished fourth in his initial heat and third in his repechage race to drop out of contention.
In the women's omnium, Lauren Ellis is now sitting in seventh place overall after finishing 11th in the 500m time trial. She will take part in the final two events of the omnium later this morning.
