Dylan Cleaver breaks down the best of the action from day one of the London 2012 Olympics.

Road race stunner
Alexander Vinokourov shocked the Britons by winning the road race. He broke clear of the lead pack with Colombian Rigoberto Uran with 7kms to go and couldn't be caught. The star-studded Great Britain squad was marooned back in the peloton, unable to get Mark Cavendish into position. A boilover of huge proportions.

Ryan Lochte 1, Michael Phelps 0
Lochte made no race of the 400 individual medley, blitzing the field. Phelps finished a distant fourth. It was the US' first gold medal of the Games.

Last arrow wins it at Lord's
It could have been their second gold but Italy stunned the US in the men's archery team. Needing a perfect 10 with their last arrow, Italy came through in the magnificent surrounds of Lord's cricket ground.

Paget in strong position
Jonathan Paget got off to a solid start accruing 44.10 penalty points to lie sixth overall, halfway through the dressage section of the three-day event. Riding Clifton Promise, Paget has laid down a good marker for his more experienced teammates, including Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson, who ride tonight. German Ingrid Klimke leads with 39.30 points.

Football Ferns fall late
New Zealand's women's soccer team had their hearts broken, conceding an 86th minute goal to Brazil to lose 1-0. Their hopes of progressing through to the next round are now hanging by a thread.

From disqualified to silver in one day
South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan had one of the crazier days at the Games after being disqualified during the heats of the 400-metre freestyle, before winning an appeal and getting reinstated for the final. The defending champion couldn't repeat his Beijing performance finishing with a silver.

Medal watch:
New Zealand failed to medal on the opening day with Jack Bauer the closest after finishing 10th in the men's road race. China lead the medal tally with four golds and one bronze. Australia earned their first gold of the Olympics after victory in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay.
