Olympic rowers' oars will slice through the water with ease after thousands of tonnes of weed are hacked out of the competition lake in Penrith.
Games organisers have begun the mammoth task of cutting the weed, which ensnared the oars of Australian rowers at their national trials.
Two harvesters will each cut six tonnes of weed from the lake every day for the next seven weeks at a cost of around $750,000.
