Dan Slater and the pairing of Hamish Pepper and Jim Turner have provided New Zealand's sailing team with an ounce of welcome good news.
Slater, placed eighth after the opening two races, won his first race and came sixth in his second to move up one spot in the overall standings and, more importantly, built a 20-point buffer on 11th place which he must beat in order to qualify for the medal race.
The Star class pairing of Pepper and Turner, like Slater, started their day in style in winning their opening race before failing to follow up the early form with a 12th-place finish in their second. They now sit in 10th place overall and in with a shot of progressing.
There were sluggish starts for the men in the Laser and 49er classes. Andrew Murdoch posted a 12th and an eighth placing in the Laser while in the 49er Peter Burling, Blair Tuke finished ninth and seventh.
The women's Elliott 6m team of Jenna Hansen, Stephanie Hazard and Susannah Pyatt had a one-win, one-loss record to match their day one performance - they sit in a good position to advance to the knockout phase of their competition.
