Old 1c and 2c coins will be hung around the necks of Olympic placegetters in Sydney.
The bronze medals fashioned for the 2000 Games have been made out of the melted-down brown coins, which are no longer used as currency across the Tasman.
Three thousand medals of three different colours have been made at the Royal Australian Mint for the September Games. The gold medals - created in Perth - are actually silver, with a gold plating.
