It was no happy birthday for Olympic decathlon champion Dan O'Brien, who told the world that he would not defend his title in Sydney.
On his 34th birthday, O'Brien pulled out of the US Olympic trials with a foot injury that won't heal in time for the Games.
The 1996 gold medallist suffered a major tear in the arch of his left foot training last week.
O'Brien became famous in 1992 when he was hyped as the Olympic favourite, but never passed qualifying for the team.
