New Zealand's Andrew Nicholson finished an agonising fourth in the individual three-day event this morning in a competition he won't look back too fondly on.
Nicholson went in as one of the favourites but felt he was harshly disadvantaged in the dressage when his ride was hit by a 10-minute weather delay because of a thunderstorm.
He surprisingly dropped a rail in his second show jumping test this morning (NZT) but it didn't cost him a medal in a competition won by Germany's Michael Jung, who is also the world champion. The competition had a dramatic conclusion when Sweden's Sara Algotsson Ostholt dropped a rail on the final jump of her test to hand Jung the gold.
Mark Todd had a disappointing day, clipping another two rails in his second ride on top of the seven penalties he incurred in the first ride to finish in 12th. Jonathan Paget finished 10th after picking up only one time penalty in his final ride.
New Zealand had earlier won a bronze in the team's event.
