Weightlifter Richie Patterson lifted a combined total of 336kg but fell short of what he thought he was capable of in the in the men's 85kg division.
Patterson, who relied on injured 39-year-old biscuit factory worker Tevita Ngalu to qualify a spot for New Zealand at the Games, had hoped to lift 200kg in the clean and jerk.
He managed 186kg in the clean and jerk and 150kg in the snatch to finish seventh in his pool - a second pool lift tomorrow morning (NZT).
