The USA has dominated the medal tally at the modern Olympics from the very first Games where they edged hosts Greece by winning one more gold. After winning 11 gold in 1896 the US has added another 918 to their all-round tally with 36 more at the Beijing Olympics.
That puts the US a whopping 534 ahead of second placed Russia.
52 countries won golds at the last Olympics compared to the 11 that took home the top prize in 1896.
The most golds won at one Olympics by a single nation is the 83 picked up by the US at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, however Russia didn't compete after boycotting. Four years earlier Russia won 80 golds when the US boycotted the Moscow Games.
1984 was also New Zealand's most successful Games winning eight golds. In total New Zealand have won 36 gold medals.
