JOY IN BAGHDAD
Iraq's 1-0 victory over Australia in the soccer quarter-finals sparked delirious scenes in Baghdad. People fired guns into the air, honked car horns and waved Iraqi flags. "We hope we are able to soften the pain for the people of Iraq, who have suffered war and made so many sacrifices," said team coach Adnan Hamd. "Our families are very sad. At this difficult moment, the least we can do is try to bring them some happiness. People are cheering for us in the streets. If we could win the gold medal, it would be a source of enormous happiness for our people."
DIVING GOLD
Chantelle Newbery gave up diving after her son was born but she returned to the sport and on Sunday became the first Australian to win an Olympic diving title in 80 years. "I'd actually left the sport and I wasn't coming back. It wasn't till Jet was four months old that I decided I would give it another go," she said. "This competition has been the biggest competition for wondering if it's all worth it. I did wake up this morning thinking it had better be because it is really hard to leave him at home," she added, fighting back tears.
FAIRYTALE WIN
China hailed its surprise Olympic tennis gold medal in the women's doubles as a fairytale come true. "They were like angels bringing their luck down from heaven. There is no praise to properly describe these two," gushed the official Xinhua news agency. Li Ting and Sun Tiantian gave China its first Olympic tennis medal and stole the headlines as the next Games hosts eased past their target for Athens of 20 golds. "A dream they didn't dare to dream come true," declared the Beijing Morning Post after the dark horses beat Spanish second seeds Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-3, 6-3.
OFF TARGET
And then there was the guy who shot at the wrong target ... American Matt Emmons, who has already won a gold medal in shooting, lost his top spot on Sunday when he aimed and fired at the wrong target with his final shot.
That blew a commanding lead and allowed his opponent to take gold. Emmons, far in front after nine shots in the final, shot at the target in lane three while he was shooting in lane two.
