The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) is warning New Zealanders of the risk of terrorist attacks in Greece at this year's Olympic Games.
The advice, issued in a statement today, says the Greek government has invested heavily in security ahead of August's Olympics in Athens.
"However, the possibility of a terrorist attack, particularly against so-called 'soft targets', remains. Visitors should be security-conscious in regard to public gathering places, transport hubs, bars, clubs and hotels," the advice reads.
"In the past, bombings and personal attacks against Western commercial and diplomatic interests have occurred, including in Athens. In early May this year, three explosive devices went off outside a police station in central Athens, injuring one policeman."
MFAT is warning travellers to beware of pick-pocketing, bag-snatching, luggage theft and muggings, which it says are common in Greece. "The risk is likely to heighten during the Olympic Games."
They are also warning against the use of drugs, indecent behaviour and even photographing military sites.
MFAT recommends travellers to the Olympics get travel insurance and register with MFAT.
