KEY POINTS:
New Zealand cyclist Hayden Roulston won a silver medal in the Olympic men's 4000m individual pursuit as race favourite Bradley Wiggins proved too good here tonight.
Roulston held a narrow lead at the halfway point, but the Briton finished strongly at the Laoshan Velodrome to win gold in a time of four minutes 16.977 seconds.
Roulston recorded 4min 19.611sec in finishing a gallant second, to join Sarah Ulmer and Gary Anderson as New Zealand's only Olympic track cycling medallists.
The Ashburton rider, 27, guaranteed himself silver by qualifying second fastest when he demolished Taylor Phinney of the United States by more than seven seconds, in a time of 4min 19.232sec.
Meanwhile, Roulston's teammate Alison Shanks will ride for bronze tomorrow in the women's 3000m individual pursuit against Lesya Kalitovska of Ukraine after winning her first round contest.
Dunedin cyclist Shanks, 25, was too good for Sarah Hammer of the United States in a time of 3min 32.478sec.
That ranked her fourth fastest behind British pair Rebecca Romero and Wendy Houvenaghel, and Kalitovska who was 0.69 quicker than Shanks.
In the men's points race, New Zealand's Greg Henderson finished 10th behind Spanish gold medallist Joan Llaneras.
Llaneras won with 60 points, beating Germany's Roger Kluge (58) and Briton Chris Newton (56), while Henderson finished with 13.
