Germany's canoe slalom coach, Stefan Henze, has died from injuries he suffered when a taxi he was in crashed near the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro on Friday. Henze was 35.
German flags at all Olympic venues will be lowered to half-staff in honour of Henze, who won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Games in the men's slalom C-2 canoeing event with teammate Marcus Becker, The Associated Press reported.
"Our sympathy is with the family of Stefan Henze, his friends and all of the German Olympic team," IOC President Thomas Bach said.
After initially being treated for head injuries at a nearby hospital following Friday's crash, Henze was transferred to a clinic that specialised in neurosurgery and German Olympic team doctor Bernd Wolfahrt told reporters on Saturday that Henze was in critical condition.
German canoe team official Christian Kaeding, who was in the taxi with Henze, was released after being treated for minor injuries.
