The advance guard of New Zealand's Olympic team flew to Athens yesterday to set up the base from which athletes will soon begin their Greek odyssey.
Richard de Groen, the general team manager, set off with Tony Popplewell and Michelle Tapper to make sure preparations are completed before the team begins to move into the games village.
As well as paperwork and logistics, de Groen said an important part of the next few weeks would be making the village feel like home.
"We're taking a bit of Kiwiana and things from New Zealand for the athletes because some of them will be there for up to four weeks," he said.
"We want an environment where they can be inspired and comfortable."
As well as the traditional stocks of Vegemite and Marmite, the reminders of home will include large banners of scenic photographs.
De Groen said the next few days would be spent dealing with Olympic officials finalising entries and accreditation for New Zealand's 145 athletes.
While security has been a major consideration for these games, the New Zealanders hope it will not over-complicate the preparations.
"It's probably a bit too early to say whether it will, but security is a high priority at any Olympic Games," said de Groen.
"Yes, we will have to put up with intensive security and delays. However, the other side is that you do want to feel secure."
Chef de mission Dave Currie will arrive in Athens next week and the first athletes are expected to move into the village on July 30.
