Jesse Sergent's burgeoning road cycling career has received a massive boost with confirmation he will line up as part of the strong Radioshack Nissan Trek for three-week Giro D'Italia that starts in Denmark on Sunday.
The 23-year-old's main focus is this year's Olympic Games, and last week he was named in the team pursuit squad picked as a medal prospect, but Sergent's abilities on the road have been recognised with selection for his first grand tour.
The Giro D'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana are the grand tours on the cycling circuit.
The Giro D'Italia starts on Sunday with a prologue and Sergent will likely work as a domestique for Frank Schleck, who will be a contender for overall winner, and Daniele Bennati in the sprint stages. Sergent could feature strongly in the individual and team time trials.
The Feilding rider is a two-time individual pursuit medallist but has the potential to build a successful career on the road. He signed with Lance Armstrong's under-23 development team, Trek-Livestrong in 2008 and then in 2011 signed a professional contract with Team Radioshack who then joined forced with Leopard Trek to form Radioshack Nissan Trek.
